The Underwood farmhouse is a well-preserved example of the late Classic Cottage vernacular found in the upper Lamoille and Winooski river valleys. The house with attached stepped-back wing and attached carriage barn is trimmed with bold Greek Revival details, including entablatures at the eaves and over the main and carriage entrances and the windows, and wide, paneled corner pilasters. In a notable vernacular decorative variation, the window and entrance entablatures with their architraves and friezes are peaked. Underwood probably built the house after inheriting c. 1865 the one-hundred-and-twelve-acre farm from his father.
