This dormitory complex was originally conceived to blend with the historic neighborhood as a stepped, high-gabled grouping which opened to the slope by platforms and stairs. Although somewhat bland, it sensitively responded to a prevalent desire in the 1950s to reconcile modernism with tradition in a manner associated with the work of Pietro Belluschi. It won an award from Progressive Architecture in 1959. Pity, therefore, that its postmodernist expansion jams what used to be the openness of the complex on its downhill, Waterman Street edge.
