Located in the historic courthouse precinct, this courthouse replaced a brick building of the 1830s. Like most courthouses in Virginia, the two-story building is constructed of red brick, but the design departs from tradition in the granite door and window sills, and reflects its era in the use of steel casement windows and the cast-stone surround of the entrance. The severity of the building's detailing reflects a trend in the mid-twentieth century of elemental classical forms for prominent government buildings. Two veterans memorials stand on the courthouse grounds. A monument of 1904 to county residents who fought in the Civil War features a standing soldier set on a classical pedestal, and a tall granite obelisk (date unknown) memorializes the veterans of other wars.
