The same Colin Baker who commissioned the duplex at 243–245 also invested in this row, which is perhaps the best-preserved example in the city of monumental Second Empire row housing in the manner of what was then the latest fashion in Back Bay Boston. The ABAABAABA rhythm of the mansard dormers indicates that the row was conceived as three palatial houses abutting one another, each duplexed up the middle. The impact of the mansard is increased by its double slope and the breaking of the cornice by tiny round-headed attic windows fronted by decorative iron balustrading over each of the principal bays.
