Sayles New Village is the only extant example of company-built housing in Pawtucket, where private investors provided rental quarters for workers. When the Sayles Corporation purchased the nearby Lorraine Mill (1868, 1881, 1919) in 1881 from a worsted manufacturer and converted it to cotton, this housing was also provided. Exterior changes through time notwithstanding, the basic configuration of these one-and-one-half-story duplexes is clear, and most retain, at either end, their shelter-ing door hoods supported on ornamental brackets.
