This one-and-a-half-story frame house has the city's only gambrel roof. Its center section was built by physician Dr. Alexander Glass Strachan. Wings and a hyphen were added in the early nineteenth century, making this a multipart house. Ellen Glasgow described it in her novel Virginia (1913) as “a quaint old house, with its spreading wings, its outside chimneys, and its sloping shingled roof, from which five dormer-windows stared in a row over the slender columns of the porch.”
