1920s (148–168 Main St.); c. 1860 (85–99 Main St.)

Main Street presents another instructive cross section of mill housing. The most interesting examples are, first, brick houses with porches and dormers in Arts and Crafts manner of English model factory towns, at 148–168, all duplexes except that 156–162 contains four units. Then, across Front Street, at 85–99 Main, is four-unit housing in blunt clapboard with simple transom windows and projecting moldings as window hoods. One of these, returned to something close to what it was, demonstrates the impact of their original plainness.
