An exhausting performance in Tudor Revival, this is the first major work by Wallis E. Howe in Bristol, when he was still shedding the last vestiges of his training in the Victorian office of Martin and Hall (Providence). An example of intelligent planning, it housed rental stores on the first story and, on the upper level, approached by a broad archway, the YMCA's auditorium and gymnasium. The 1967 entrance and new lobby are appropriately reticent.
