The nondenominational IPG Chapel of Peace straddles the international boundary line. The chapel is a joint vision of the members of North Dakota and Manitoba members of the Order of the Eastern Star. Surrounded by fountains and lavishly landscaped gardens, limestone walls of the chapel are inscribed with inspirational quotations about peace from world leaders. The chapel’s late modernist design features filtered light entering through clerestory windows into a quiet space of contemplation with messages of peace inscribed into the travertine walls. The Carillon Tower was commissioned by the Veterans Organization of North Dakota as a bicentennial project in 1976 and designed to add to the beauty of the Peace Garden as well as serving a functional need. Visitors to the International Peace Garden may have the opportunity to hear a set of tuned bells, weighing twenty tons.
