Perhaps it is the showy whiteness when strong sunlight bathes this one-story commercial building that makes it so attractive. The name “Mountaineer” refers to the Pembina Hills and Pembina Gorge just west of Walhalla. Pressed metal is employed for classically inspired dentiled cornices, pilaster capitals, and a diminutive pediment-shaped datestone with finial. The covered corner entrance and transom windows are nice, too, in a late-nineteenth-century small-town way. Probably built with little aspiration for permanence, this small building still confidently asserts its presence.
