A number of houses developed in a manner that is particularly popular in Southside. An early-nineteenth-century frame house of one-and-a-half stories, often with shed dormers, is enlarged by the addition of a mid-nineteenth-century two-story wing. The two-story wing was probably designed to provide the privacy of a second-floor bedroom. Often, the two parts of the house are further united by a one-story hipped-roof porch that touches both sections.
