Alternating pedimented half-timbered and shaped Flemish gables adorn the fronts of this row of five attached dwellings, giving individuality to each. The row houses are constructed of variegated Ionia sandstone, after which the group of residences was probably named. Jackson architect Allen, who resided at 515 W. Michigan Avenue at the time of his death in 1942, probably designed the Ionia. The variation in individual units interestingly resembles that of Summit Terrace (1889) at 587–601 Summit Avenue in St. Paul, Minnesota.
