Thomas Douglas (d. 1930), a Canadian-born Saginaw businessman, built the general store, then the hotel to house fishermen and hunters coming to the area of the North Branch of the Au Sable River. It became headquarters for the North Branch Outing Club, a sportsmen's club for hunting and fishing in the Au Sable Valley.
