Blackstone Square Elementary School

1976, Stull Associates. 380 Shawmut Ave.

This inner-city school conveys a factory aesthetic by means of industrial materials, brick-colored concrete block, and metal siding. Modernity is reinforced by long horizontal rows of glass windows built for strength and durability. The whole is set back from the street by masonry walls perforated by prominent geometric forms, a large circle and rectangle. The dense program is reflected in the school's segmented massing—the media center, science center, cafeteria, auditorium, music and seminar rooms, and gymnasium. Further, provision for community facilities assures constant usage.
