Defining the MIT campus on the farthest west end, two high-rise residential buildings serve as the principal landmarks, the more conspicuous Tang Hall, a twenty-four-story tower on Memorial Drive, and Westgate slightly behind. The former, its entrance on the east side, houses graduate students; the latter, with its entrance facing the river, is for families. Both are concrete-clad steel structures; the Tang's chamfered corners provide river views, whereas Westgate features such amenities as playgrounds, a picnic area, and tennis courts. A huge red steel sculpture by Tony Smith (1961) is a powerful presence enlivening the landscape.
