Designed by perhaps the most influential railroad station architect at the turn of the twentieth century, this is his only extant station still used for its original purpose. Commissioned by the Boston & Providence Railroad in 1892, Bradford Lee Gilbert provided a design closely modeled on earlier stations by H. H. Richardson for that line and for the Boston & Albany Railroad. MBTA now uses the recently restored horizontally emphasized granite and brownstone-trimmed station as part of its commuter rail system for Metropolitan Boston.
