The oldest synagogue in Chelsea, this building documents the tremendous importance of the Jewish community in Chelsea at the turn of the twentieth century. The architect, Harvey Dustin Joll, was one of the three principal designers working in Chelsea after the fire of 1908. One of the largest orthodox synagogues in Massachusetts of its generation, the red brick building with twin turreted and domed towers contains nearly all of its original components: the holy ark, the central raised bimah, the separate women's gallery, carved oak furniture, and mural decoration on the walls and ceiling. Also significant is the survival of the shingled succah built in 1909 for the congregation.
