c. 1849, Richard Bond. 447 Washington St.

The popular image of Brookline throughout much of the nineteenth century was a semirural suburb with picturesque cottages, epitomized by a view of Candler Cottage in American Cottage and Villa Architecture by J. C. Sidney. Published in New York in 1850, this book featured Richard Bond's Gothic Revival design for Candler Cottage. Mrs. Samuel Candler built this house and carriage barn with her son John, a Boston merchant. During the late nineteenth century, the entrance portico to the house was altered with a latticework design. The barn was converted for apartments in the twentieth century.
