This vernacular stone cottage was constructed as the country house of a Manchester businessman. The building is an anomaly, one of the few stone buildings in the Richmond area built before the 1880s. The cottage has undergone some extensive porch modifications. Originally a simple entrance porch graced the structure. By 1900, when the building served as a trolley terminal, a veranda encircled it. In 1936 a local garden club restored the structure and added a replica of the Gothic porch of the river front at Gunston Hall in Fairfax County.
