In this instance the Prairie school mode has been modified so that the walls read as surfaces delicately punctuated by windows placed close to the surface. The Franke house illustrates how a number of the younger Prairie architects were looking directly to Europe for inspiration; for example, this house shares many features found in the pre-World War II work of the Viennese architect Josef Hoffmann, such as his 1908 exhibition for the Vienna Art School.
