Grenville M. Dodge House

1869, W. W. Boyton. 605 S. 3rd St.

A high blufftop location provides a commanding position for this house, designed in 1869 for the city's leading citizen, a railroad builder and Civil War general. Though the mansard roof places the house safely within the French Second Empire style, much of the detailing is late Italianate. The interior was modified over the years, reflecting changes of taste from the mid-1870s on. The present entrance veranda is also of a later date.
