1883, S. B. Reed. 508 E. 4th St.

This suburban house was designed for John C. Reichert by the New York architect S. B. Reed and represents one of the most impressive Eastlake-style houses still standing in Iowa. The two-and-a-half-story wood-sheathed house exhibits a classic Eastlake tower on its left corner. The tower's steeply pitched broken roof contains narrow hipped dormers on each side. Below the overhanging roof, supported by corner brackets, is the usual pattern of vertical boards with semi-circular ends. The gable to the right has bargeboards and a double wheel pattern projected as open work between the bargeboards. The shed-roof entrance porch is carried around to the side and joins onto a light framework portecochère with its own steeply pitched hipped roof.
