A pioneering building for Richmond, this was the first entirely fireproof structure erected in the city. Built for a leading department store, the structure is Richmond's version of McKim, Mead and White's Gorham Building in New York. The classical detailing of the cornice and the arcaded first floor contrast with the sleek, unornamented upper floors. Carneal and Johnston reused this format for several of their buildings around Richmond.
