As early as the mid-1920s, clients and architects began to look directly at Iowa's Greek Revival/Federal houses of the 1840s–1850s for sources of inspiration for their own regional versions of the Anglo-Colonial. The Marshall house (
CE053) and the Collins house exemplify this interest. Both houses are of native sandstone, as were many of their mid-nineteenth-century prototypes; the gable roof and the balanced facade are other features characteristic of this adaptation. While these houses do indeed convey a sense of archaeological correctness, they reveal equally the decades within which they were built.
