Hawaii's first resort-related golf clubhouse, it has set the tone for those that followed. Sheltered by shingled, mansard-capped roofs, the golf clubhouse nestles into the landscape. Its below-grade, lava-rock-veneered first story houses the cart barn and locker rooms, while the upper level serves as the public entrance with an imposing porte-cochere supported by ivy-clad lava-rock columns. The porte-cochere accesses an open breezeway-like lobby, which has a pro shop to one side and a restaurant to the other. The open makai side of the lobby and restaurant overlook the Kaanapali golf courses. The plan offers functional clarity and a pleasant openness, which have been repeated countless times, with slight variations, at warm weather resorts around the world.
