A solar electric power company built this showpiece headquarters in the sprawl belt south of Newark. The 160,000-square-foot facility combined headquarters and manufacturing space. A “green” structure, its dramatically curving blue facade contains solar cells in the spandrel glass of the curtain wall. A solar-electric system on the roof can produce more than 300,000 kilowatt-hours of power annually. Inside, a colorful lobby floor is made of recycled glass. The company only occupied the facility for eighteen months before going bankrupt. Plans were subsequently made to convert the empty building into a school.
