This eight-story, post–World War II federal project rose amid the fields of Hollingsworth farm. A big, muscular Art Deco building in brick and limestone, the hospital had 320 beds, rooms wired for radio reception, and an auditorium where movies could be shown. The specifications (1947) contained seventy-eight sections and hundreds of pages of type. Elsmere grew phenomenally with suburbanization and was, for a time around 1960, the third largest incorporated town in the state.
