In the design for the Pocahontas County Courthouse (1920–1923), the Des Moines firm of Proudfoot, Bird and Rawson produced one of its many Beaux-Arts schemes. The three-story block sheathed in light-colored Bedford limestone exhibits the traditional rusticated ground floor; above, the remaining two floors are encompassed within recessed panels of Doric columns. Everything about the design is well proportioned, “correct,” and dignified. The courthouse is situated within a well-landscaped park (Courthouse Square) at the north end of Main Street.

Between Third and Fourth on Main Street is the Streamline Moderne Rialto Theater (1938), designed by Wetherell and Harrison. Its wedge-shaped marquee ends in a group of tumbling curved bands, and a similar pattern of bands climbs up the center of the theater building itself.
