The town's 48-block grid, with one central block reserved for a park and an adjacent one for the site of a county courthouse, was laid out in 1856. At the end of the 1860s the north-south line of the Iowa Central Railroad had reached the community, and by the end of the century the east-west Chicago and Great Western Railroad traversed the town.
