Traer and much of Tama County were initially settled in the middle to late 1850s. The site selected for the town was in a small grove of trees adjacent to Wolf Creek. In contrast, the surrounding lands were open prairie, and were quickly adapted to agriculture. In the railroad expansion after the Civil War, Traer first became a terminus for a branch of the Burlington Chicago Railroad, and later other railroads were brought to the community.
