The site of Oskaloosa was selected as the seat of Mahaska County in 1844. It was situated on an open prairie between the Des Moines and the Skunk rivers. Two colleges were eventually located within the community, William Penn College and John Fletcher College. At present the two colleges are Oskaloosa Christian School and Vennard College.
