Surrounded by the Wheeling Country Club golf course and set far back from the road, this antebellum brick mansion bears striking similarities to the Henry K. List House (
WH36) in North Wheeling and the J. W. Paxton House (
WH13.4) downtown. Like them, it has an orderly five- bay facade with Italianate trim and extremely tall windows on both floors. A small cupola atop the hipped roof of the double-pile house is original, but the dormers are not.

John C. Campbell, the builder, was a native of Ireland, who enjoyed a long, respected career in the Northern Panhandle as a banker. He also served as a delegate to the Virginia General Assembly.
