Kenwood Place was developed in 1899 and is lined with several handsome early-twentiethcentury Queen Anne, Shingle Style, and Colonial Revival houses. The form and details of this particular New England transplant were inspired by well-known originals like the John Hancock House in Boston, often copied in suburbs of that city such as Brookline and Chestnut Hill. The five-bay brick facade has a handsome central Ionic frontispiece, including a one-story porch with a balustered deck above. Dormers on the gambrel roof have broken-arched pediments. Although the Tiernan House is a loose, and perhaps florid, reworking of the Hancock House, it exudes a quiet, orderly sense of Georgian propriety among its Kenwood Place neighbors.
