Because Cass was a company town, there was no business district: all commerce took place at the company store. This huge frame structure, utterly utilitarian in design and plan, is pivotally located at the entrance to Cass, east of the residential grid and close to the depot. Originally smaller and of two stories, the present threestory building has two sections, the shorter one, of eight bays, slightly recessed from the longer, ten-bay portion. One of the state's largest company stores, it accommodated groceries and supplies on the first floor, furniture on the second, and building and plumbing equipment on the third. It now serves as headquarters for the Cass Scenic Railroad and contains a shop and restaurant.
