Wellsburg Wharf serves as a rare reminder of the vibrant activity that once thrived along many Ohio River landings. Actually nothing more than a cobblestone-paved surface that extends some 200 feet along the riverbank south of 6th Street and declines from street level into the river, it is West Virginia's best remaining example of its genre. Boats, some built in Wellsburg, were once launched here, and adventurers, settlers, soldiers, and merchants once trod its sloped, uneven pavement. When the wharf was established in the late eighteenth century, it was simply a dirt slope, but in 1836, townspeople subscribed funds to construct a more substantial landing. Wellsburg Wharf was partially restored in 1968.
