1921–1928, Rossell E. Mitchell. 215 S. Sycamore St.

This smooth Indiana limestone church is an interpretation of James Gibbs's design for St. Martin-in-the-Fields (1724) in London. Behind its elegant three-bay Ionic portico rises an elaborate multistage steeple. The publication of Gibbs's Book of Architecture in 1728 spread the use of his elaborate steeple designs. Congregations in the colonial period, and even more so those in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, emulated these complex buildings, a trend resurrected in Colonial Revival churches such as Trinity.
