One of the finest Greek Revival houses in Richmond, the building began as a side-hall town house. The addition of the east wing converted it to a center-hall mansion. Particularly noteworthy are the classical cast iron balconies and full-length windows on the front facade and the two-story porch overlooking the James River on the rear. Next door, at 2601 East Franklin Street, is the Ligon-Cowardin House (c. 1860, 1872), a three-story brick house that originally began as two stories. It also has an addition to its east with a delicate cast iron entry.
