The imperial piano nobile and columnar Federal–Colonial Revival mode favored by the federal government in the 1920s and early 1930s are shown in this well-detailed structure. Ironically, the historical reference is more to New England and Charles Bulfinch than to the South. The design was contemporaneous with that of the reconstructed Governor's Palace in Colonial Williamsburg, which would soon influence the appearance of federal buildings.
