This large Italianate house bears a strong resemblance to “Design Twenty-First: A Suburban Residence,” published in Samuel Sloan's The Model Architect (1852). Sloan, a Philadelphia architect, found in Virginia a ready following for his bombastic designs. In the 1850s Wolfe Street marked the southern edge of Alexandria; beyond lay open fields.
