Unpaved until 1976, the two-block-long avenue was transformed into a plaza once the building of Our Lady of Refuge Church (
SM8) provided an axial terminus at its north end, and walled commercial establishments flanked its sides. At the opposite end, sandstone cliffs overlook the Rio Grande and northern Mexico. The rehabilitation recaptured the original spatial composition of the plaza after removal of an insensitive 1976 landscaped mall, and the application of a new, textured-concrete surface to recall the historic topping in caliche.
