At the encouragement of Dr. Arthur C. Scott, W. W. Kyle, a wealthy businessman from Beaumont, financed the construction of this thirteen-story hotel in downtown Temple. Upon completion, the Scott and White Hospital leased the upper floors for its patient's families. The Baker Hotel chain managed the remainder of the building. The Kyle's architectural style is a blend of Mediterranean and Pueblo Revival, somewhat unusual in the state. It was renovated in 1991 for elderly housing. Walling built the similar LaSalle Hotel in Bryan (
NS9) the same year.
