Casa del Sol

This building exemplifies the experimentation in thin shell concrete construction that took place throughout the Valley in the mid-twentieth century. Originally enveloped by a curtain wall that is today obscured with stucco, the circular structure—a softer, gentler version of other geometric concrete designs by Taniguchi—is outstanding for its two-inch-thick roof that lithely drapes over its supporting framework of radial beams. As it extends slightly over the beam ends, the roof canopy offers yet another break to further evidence its plasticity.
