St. Louis Catholic Church

Fronting on Houston Square, St. Louis is the third Catholic church to be built in Castroville using the same name. The first was a simple one-story limestone building that was dedicated on November 9, 1846, and is located on the 1200 block of Angelo Street and is now part of the Moye Retreat Center ( CJ5). When the church became too small for the expanding congregation, the second St. Louis Church was built on this site in 1850 but was razed to erect the new church. The present limestone church's simple Gothic Revival detailing is more stylish than that of most stone churches of the period in Texas. The interior columns and timber trusses, which support the nave roof, are quite sophisticated in character for so isolated a congregation. The current spire is an addition of 1908, at which time the stained glass windows began to be installed.
