The park recalls the arrival of Zachary Taylor's Army of Observation in Corpus Christi. Encamped in rows of tents that extended for nearly a mile along the peninsula-shaped North Beach, the first water well for Taylor's four-thousand-man army was dug at the location of Artesian Park. The park was donated by Kinney to the city in 1854 in memory of the short but intense military interlude that, as supplier to the troops, turned him into a wealthy man. Beautified and expanded over the years, the park includes walkways, a pergola, and a gazebo.
