Despite its high hipped roof, the Potter House, built for a real estate and insurance broker, has a strong horizontal quality, emphasized by the thin ochre Roman brick that McKim, Mead and White popularized beginning in the 1880s. Detail is effectively limited to sheet-copper trim for bay windows, balustrades, and dormers, which, in its weathered verdigris, contrasts handsomely with the brick. The interior shows Nickerson's interest in interlocking spaces in a rich variety of woods.
