The wide-gabled body of this nicely preserved Queen Anne church exterior accepts a cluster of appendages to its front. An entrance porch, domestic in mien but overly wide (in sympathy with the big gable behind), butts against a shed-roofed entrance vestibule, which, in turn, butts against a spire off the corner opposite from the porch. The collision of shapes, which can be piquant in the best of Queen Anne, is here somewhat clumsy. So perhaps is the exceptional shape of the spire, in which a swelling, mansardlike base is abruptly pinched and capped by an octagon steeple (doubtless an awkward echo of the original spire cap to the round-topped belfry of the nearby Pawtucket Congregational Church [
PA22]). Typical Queen Anne details are the most delightful aspect of this design.
