Acting as a screen behind City Hall, the brick factory rising directly from the river's edge, built originally for the Lebanon Mill Company, reveals the everyday straightforwardness by which standard segmental-arched windows minimize the enclosure of a planar brick wall—the effect all the finer because the windows contain their original wooden sash. Note, too, how the slight additional height of the firstfloor windows in each stack gives a visual boost to the vertical effect—which, however, terminates too abruptly in the collision of topmost windows against the cornice. An adjacent factory, which extended this rhythmic walling of the river, was lost to a 1978 fire.
