Into the 1990s, this was an especially impressive pyramid of sheds, containers, and elongated ducts made of wood or corrugated metal for conveyor belts. It fascinated as a record of the successive functional adaptations and improvements essential in any such structure, where machine and factory meet most directly. The ghosting of its thinly sheathed forms by white dust fused the parts and intensified their photogenic possibilities, as perhaps so did its rise out of the hollow of prior operations. As depletion of resources begins to alter operations, however, dismantling has reduced some of the complexity that characterized this industrial heap. Yet this old ghost, recalling continuous operation from the colonial period, still merits attention.
