The mill for which this village was once named, the former Ashville Mill (1848; Canonchet Road just south of Stubtown Road), retains some sense of its original character as a handsome, medium-sized Greek Revival mill in rubble masonry on a potentially pretty site. But it is enveloped in ad hoc attachments. So among the architectural offerings of this village, St. Elizabeth's Church is the most exceptional. To the standard gabled box with the usual square-cornered windows, the carpenter-designer added a projecting gabled vestibule entrance with a pointed arch for the door. The tower interlocks the other two elements with more pointed openings (gable rather than arched) and tapers to the belfry, thereby augmenting the aspirant quality of its stubby steeple. The folded quality of the tower recalls St. Thomas in nearby Alton (
RI6) but employs different elements with less sophistication.
