This ambitious Second Empire house is relatively small in size but almost overly inflected, as so often seen in remote village settings like this. Its location, opposite the west end of High Street, reinforces its presence in the village. The cross-gabled roof equivocates between mansard and gambrel. Although the walls have been aluminum sided, the ornament is intact, including the climactic tower capped by a melon-shaped dome, with hooded oculi and ornamental metal cresting. The all-white surface is unfortunate, although not necessarily permanent. Across the street, at 197 Main, is the mansard mode more conventional to the area: cubic main block with flared lower slope and full-width front porch.
